You can easily make your own crossover cable if you have the right tools and supplies. To do this, you will need to have cable (this should be rated CAT 5), a crimper, connectors (jacks), wire cutters and a wire stripper. Here are the six easy steps:

1) Strip two inches from the plastic off the end of the cable, being careful not to cut into the wires, which would meaning starting all over again.
2) Spread the wires apart, holding the base in your hand. You will have a couple of inches of untwisted wire at this point, which you will take care of later on.
3) If you are not using a pre-made cable, you will have to install the end jacks. If the cable is pre-made, you will only have to install one end jack. Untwist the exposed wires, being careful not to twist them down into the plastic jacket. Once all of the wires are untwisted, get your wire cutters and cut all wires to a one half inch length (above the jacket).
4) Now you can start sliding the wires into the jack. Once they are in, they should stick out to just about the front of the jack, and some of the jacket for the wires will be inside the jack.
5) It’s time to use the crimpers. Hold on to the jack and the cable, and insert the jack onto the crimper. Squeeze the crimper once it is in place, and you will hear a clicking sound which tells you that you are doing it right. Continue to turn the crimper until the clicking stops. You can now let go of the jack and the crimpers, and everything should stay in place.
6) All you have left to do is inspect your work to make sure that you have done everything properly. Look at the end of the jack and make sure that the copper connectors are not pressed down against the wires. The jacket should be securely crimped to hold the jack in place.

As you can see, there really is nothing to it. If you are not sure that you can do the job yourself, you can purchase a crossover cable wherever you get the rest of your computer supplies.
